Women Together for Change
About: The Women Together for Change Project was created in 2003 by and for HIV-positive women infected and affected by HIV/AIDS on the island of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Their goal is to empower to enhance women lives so that women can better address the challenges, stigma and discrimination faced in living with HIV/AIDS in a small rural community.
Through their programs they lead, educate, and advocate in their community, and set the standards and expectations for a higher quality of life for all women. Women Together for Change is committed to support women living with HIV/AIDS to be the best advocates and are determined to make a difference on the island of St. Croix and assist in reducing the spread of HIV in the Virgin Islands.
Women Together for Change Programs
The Women Together for Change project advocates for any and all issues related to HIV-positive women and their families. They deal with issues related to healthcare, medication, food/voucher assistance, housing, childcare, education assistance and transportation. Members of the project take on an active, visible and vocal role in local activities, community planning groups, client support services and advisory boards. They respond to requests for public speaking engagements through our Formal Speakers Bureau, sharing our personal stories, encouraging testing and the importance of knowing your HIV status. They speak on the radio; television and the local newspapers, to help reduce the stigma associated to HIV/AIDS and to also increase the community’s understanding of the issues facing women who are living with HIV/AIDS in the Virgin Islands.
The Women Together for Change project is currently working on creating a Traveling Photo-voice Exhibit to put on display in local Art Galleries to again, raise public awareness to the complex issues surrounding HIV infection.
